The SpyMaster's Lady is one of the best books - if not the best book - I have read (amongst a host of good books) in years. It's a fast-paced Napoleonic-era spy love story that is utterly compelling, deeply romantic and very witty. The hero Gray is super-smart, tough, honourable and kind. You could say the same thing for the heroine Annique but her toughness is edged with vulnerability. She has a wry philosophical sense of humour that made me laugh out loud many times. The spy subplot is clever and completely believable and I since reading The SpyMaster's Lady, I have a very hard time accepting that No. 7 Meek Street was NOT the precursor to MI6. The romance is both sexy and heartfelt and left me with that happy feeling that all is well in the world. This book is definitely a keeper! The rest of the books in the series are also excellent.

Exceptional. This will go on my very short re-read list. Love the characters. Annique is one of those amazingly talented heroines, also brave (even though she is often terrified—with good reason). Grey is a swoon-worthy hero, perfectly equal to her. Their conflict is totally believable (no stupid misunderstandings). The villains are low-down and nasty, the kind you love to hate. The love scenes are wonderful, romantic and hot. The writing is beautiful, but not at all overdone.
This is the love story of a young French spy who has been lied to about her origins and an English spy who captures her and falls in love with her. The setting is during the Reign of Terror after the French Revolution. The plot is convoluted and leads the two main characters and an assortment of supporting characters racing through the French countryside after escaping a nasty French official who follows them to London with the purpose of murdering the young woman before she can reveal compromising facts about his duplicity. The book is well written and holds the reader's interest. I would have given it 5 stars if the relationship between the two lovers hadn't been manipulated to create a happy ending. Even so, I was intrigued by the author's skill and looked for other books in the series to read.
This was such a delightful surprise in terms of its sophistication and character development. It doesn't lean too heavily on the crutch of sexual tension, although there is a goodly helping of it. These two people, Annique and Robert, meet one another in a basement prison in France, where it's every man & woman for him/herself. It is only after they escape that they are thrown together by circumstance and must learn to rub along (heh heh) with one another as best they can. The era and setting(s) are well-researched, and the plot has some decent but not shocking twists. I thought it was the first book in the series -- woops -- not so. But I found it a very pleasurable read and have already read another of the series. Soon to go for a third.
Eloquent, elegant, simply delicious prose! I was sucked into the book on the first page, and found myself reading all night. I could not put it down. Ms Bourne's writing style is reminiscent of Laura Kinsale's best novels, yet uniquely her own. The characters's 'voices' whether dialogue or internal, vibrate with realism, beauty, and intelligent wit. I found myself enchanted by the love scenes, gasping at some of the action, and sighing with satisfaction when it came to an end. The surprises and twists are endless and believable. I immediately purchased two more, and have greedily devoured them in only a few days. So I bought the rest of the series. I hope all her series are this intriguing and amazing, and I know I will not be disappointed.
Overall, I liked this book. It was a good espionage story, I liked the idea of a French spy young woman and an English spy leader being thrown together, their growing admiration for each other's abilities. I also liked the group of English spies escaping France with the heroine, especially the secondary characters Adrian and Doyle. I enjoyed very much the way the spies worked together and included Annique even though nthey were onopposing sides. I liked the way Annique's inner conflict was set up about the Albion Plan and to whomn should her loyalty be pledged.
I had a serious problem with the book and a few minor problems, although on the whole, I enjoyed it. The serious problem is the dubious consent sex the heroine and the hero are having - some more details below under spoiler alert. The minor problems are related to the supposed extraordinary spying abilities of Annique, as some of them really stretch reality; and also, if she is allegedly so good, why does she make such elementary mistake as trusting Grey under an alias? I also had some problem with her attitude towards sex. Details below under spoiler alert.
I still recommend this book to those who aren't much bothered by the dubious consent scene.

Dubious consent problems
The heroine is kept drugged for a few days when she is captured by the English spies. During this time, descriptions, from her POV, are hazy, but it is clear she experiences intense lust for the hero (who keeps her in his arms/lap/embrace most of the time) At first reading I thought that Grey touched her inappropriately and pleasured her, but on rereading I realized that it was all drug induced arousal on her part, and Grey tried to avoid further arousing and/or satisfying her. Even so, it is discomforting to read about the heroine's humiliation that she rubs up against a man who had drugged her. Also, their first non-drugged sexual encounter is completely dubious/non consensual and takes place right after the Annique realizes that Grey betrayed her, was with her pretending to be someone else, and took her captive in the English Intelligence Headquarters. Right after, she is given a bath and Grey has intercourse with her in the bathtub. It is clear that she has intense desire for him, and that she has pleasure, but she is not in an emotional state of intimacy and is conflicted all the way through the scene. It's a particular pet peeve of mine when the man tells the woman he knows she wants it when she is clearly undecided and reluctant although aroused.
Annique is described as a very innocent/sexually unawakened, embarrassed, shy girl as relating to Grey and physical intimacy with him. However, she can pretend to playact a role she calls "The Courtesan" in which role she can be seductive and arousing. Now I understand she as spy can immerse herself in a role different from herself, but an inexperienced girl unaware of sexuality can't have the experiences to validly play the expereinced woman who is in control of her sexuality. It was confusing.
